On Wednesday, I got done with class at 14.30 because my class from 16.30 to 18.00 was canceled. Awesome! So me and Drew went to check out the Weinachtsmarkt (Christmas market) here in Freiburg. It is just this extremely cool market that is surprisingly large. They sell a ton of Christmas-type things. And they have a special drink called Glühwein. It's basically a type of mulled wine mixed with spices and fruit and some other alcohol. Oh, and it's served warm. Extremely warm. Burn-your-tongue warm. Anyway, after checking that out, I went back to my flat and just chilled for a while.
This is the Weinachtsmarkt. Sweet, huh?
This is Moni, Alison, Paulis, and me enjoying some Glühwein at the Weinachtsmarkt.
Later that night, I met some more people at the Weinachtsmarkt again, and we chilled there for a while. Then we decided to go to this Irish pub in the city for karaoke night. Which was awesome. I sang that Kid Rock/Sheryl Crow song Picture with Moni. And then I sang Ain't No Mountain High Enough with Joko. So that was pretty sweet. And other people sang too in our group, and they were amazing as well. Fun night.
Moni and myself singing Picture at karaoke night. I destroyed the Kid Rock part, and Moni was an excellent Sheryl Crow.
On Thursday, I went on a hike with Drew on the Schlossberg, which is basically this small mountain next to Freiburg. At the top is this awesome tower that you can climb which gives you a great view over the city. So that was pretty sweet. Also, I went to this glasses shop to try to see if they could fix my glasses (I broke them last week). She said they couldn't fix them because it was literally just snapped off, but she could try to find a replacement part instead. Which she did. And she replaced it. So they feel kind of awkward on my face, but they work much better than they did when they were broken. And here's the best part: she did it for free. Didn't charge me anything. I love Germany sometimes.
This is in front of the Münster in Freiburg. It's basically just a huge cathedral.
This is that tower on top of the Schlossberg that you can climb up. Which we did...
This is the view from the top of the tower. You can basically see the entire city. The Münster is the tall steeple just to the right of my face.
On Thursday night, a bunch of us in our program that were staying in Freiburg over Thanksgiving break threw together this dinner. I wasn't expecting much, but it turned out to be awesome. There were 11 of us total I think, and we had a TON of food. Let me try to list as much of it as I can: chicken/turkey (we were unsure who got which), mashed potatoes and gravy, plantains, sweet potatoes, homemade mac and cheese, dinner rolls (millions of them), fruit kebabs, fruit salad, and apple crisp. Oh, and lots of wine and champagne. It was friggin delicious. We had this plan to go out clubbin after that, but I think we were all too tired from the enormous dinner, so we just went back to our flats basically.
When I got back, I used my German cell phone to call home. I had 25 Euro on it still, and I figured I might as well make a call home and use some of the money up because I won't need it in three weeks. I wasn't sure what the rate was when I called home, but I figured it was probably 0,50 Euro per minute or so. Well as it turns out, it was 2 Euro per minute. I talked for 10 minutes, so I spent 20 Euro on one phone call. That is officially the most expensive phone call of my life. But the money would have just gone down the drain anyway, so it's really not a big deal. I still have 5 Euro on my phone, and that should be plenty to get me through the rest of the semester.
Today, I have not done much so far. I did some homework this morning actually. I reworked my German paper, and I did a stupid homework assignment for EU-US Relations. And then I went and did laundry. I'm hoping that is the last time I will have to do laundry this semester. Although that probably means that I will be coming home with a suitcase full of dirty clothes. Love you, mom!
